I'm not sure why Shake Shack has such bad reviews! Yes, it is pricier than In-N-Out but they have a much larger menu and use better quality ingredients. I prefer the taste of their patties, which are a lot juicier than most places (mine drips every time!!). Their fries are also less greasy than In-N-Out's. I ask for a side of shack sauce and add hot sauce (found with other condiments) to it for the perfect fry dip.
This was the first location I've been to where you order through an iPad. It's pretty fun and feels so "bay area."
Minus one star for the confusing layout. This place is like a maze!!! So small with not much seating. My favorite Shake Shack location in California is definitely still the one in UTC (San Diego). -

I was really looking forward to this visit, as it was my first. The ordering process was fine, I received my meal quickly, but the actual quality of food was an unpleasant surprise. My cheeseburger was cold and the fries were crunchy and hollow. I was hoping to understand what all the hype has been about, but looks like I'll have to hope for a better experience next time.
The two stars are for the ease of ordering, clean interior, and quick service. But the lack there of more stars is the food itself. -

I will start by saying that I LOVE Shake Shack! I've tried it in New York and let me tell you... I can eat a million of those Shack Stacks. I was stoked when I found out they opened on in Palo Alto and literally waited almost a year just for the hype to die down. Sorry, but nothing is worth a 2 hr wait.
Well, good thing I waited because I was so disappointed. The worst part is that I hyped it up for my coworker and had to be like... Sorry dude.
The restaurant is super Bay Area. Like super high tech; you order through a tablet and basically don't talk to anyone. Anyways, let's get to the food...
I ordered the Shack Stack and the cheese fries to share. The patty was flavorless like wowow the audacity! The burger was extremely greasy and it made me so nauseous. The cheese on the fries became this grainy consistency as it cooled which was super gross. The drive back to San Jose was miserable for the both of us. It didn't sit well and we felt like crap. We ended up going to the gym after just to sweat out the major regret we were feeling. I'm pretty sure he threw up and will never look at Shake Shack the same way again.
What a shame. -

Hello, stranger
(ooh) It seems so good to see you back again
How long has it been?
Being originally from the East coast, it had been a minute since I last had the undisputed champion of the coast vs. coast burger battle. Yeah yeah I know, Shake Shack is overpriced. But pricing aside, it's hands down the better burger. Sorry In-N-Out fanboys (though I do enjoy me a double-double from time to time so don't hate too much).
I got a double Shackburger, the bougie California burger special thingy they have, fries and a shake. My advice? Skip the bougie thang as it was just ok (costs more too) and stick with the classic Shackburger, which tasted just like what I'd had oh-so-many times in NYC.
I still remember my first time like it was yesterday. No, not that one. Get your head out of the gutter.
My first ever bite of the Shackburger in New York was a religious experience, and though this one wasn't quite that, it came pretty damn close to approximating it.
Even though I live in SF I actually came back later in the week (don't judge), and this time I did it right, ordering 2 double Shackburgers...along with the usual suspects of fries and a shake because health. There are some complaints of consistency in the other reviews and maybe there's truth to it, but I personally did not find any issues with that here.
All I have to say is, I may still be far from home but:
Oh-uh-oh, I my, my, my, my
I'm so happy that you're here at last -

Shake Shack tries to earn its footing here in the West Coast, but with quality like this, it may be standing on shaky ground.
Even though Shake Shack has been open for a while now, the little establishment was still jam packed with eager patrons for an early Saturday evening. And while a crowd normally spells good food, it wasn't the case here.
Firstly, the self-serving ordering system is wholly unnecessary. Not only did it require you to share your phone number for them to let you know your food is ready, but there were also plenty of customers who had a hard time navigating the menu, causing a huge back-up. What's wrong with normal counter service? Getting a free table meant lurking around and jumping the minute someone stands up, and for a space so small, it felt awkward to say the least.
For our dinner, I got the SmokeShack while the hubby chose the Chick'n Shack and to share, we ordered fries, the black and white shake, and a fresh lemonade. Let's start off with the best items: the shake and the fries. The fries were fried to perfection and the crinkle shape made for easy dipping. The chocolate and vanilla shake was decadent, but not too sweet. Super good!
Unfortunately, everything else fell flat. The SmokeShack had a meaty patty, but I was disappointed that the burger wasn't served with any lettuce or tomatoes to add some brightness. The buns, while buttery, were too soft and the size of the burger itself was certainly small for the price. The hubby never raved about his fried chicken sandwich, noting that it wasn't anything special. The chicken had a good crispy extieror and it was somewhat juicy, but the hefty price didn't feel justified. Also, the "fresh" lemonade certainly tasted like false advertising.
In the end, we paid over $30 for our meal and for "fast food" it was certainly expensive. After our hectic dinner here, let's just say we were better off going to an actual restaurant and enjoying some burgers there.
